Installing the Stackdriver Agent from Source

Last Updated: Mar 24, 2014 09:03PM EDT

The Stackdriver agent is a packaged version of collectd with a few changes to make it easier to install and configure.  If you are running on an operating system we don't currently support, this article will attempt to help you get things set up.

NOTE: We recommend using the packaged version to get the best experience and the most consistent data.  The source tree that we use for our packages is also available on github.

The basic configuration of collectd to send data to Stackdriver has a few requirements

  • You must be running at least collectd 5.2.0 (required for the aggregation plugin)
  • You must set the hostname of your instance to be the instance id of the instance rather than the hostname
  • You must set up the write_http plugin to send data to the Stackdriver data gateway
If you can do these steps, then a configuration file like the one at https://gist.github.com/katzj/81a1cfb57662a56fd660 should get you started sending data to Stackdriver.  If you have problems getting the data to appear, please let us know.
